Kamala Harris has surpassed Donald Trump as the favorite to win the 2024 U.S. presidential election, according to Betfair, the UK-based betting exchange.
Harris wasn’t even the Democratic party’s candidate three weeks ago, but has consistently gained ground on Trump since replacing Joe Biden atop the ticket, and is now the one to beat.
Chance to Win Presidential Election
- Kamala Harris: 49.50%
- Donald Trump: 48.08%
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: 0.63%
Trump had a 72% chance to win the 2024 U.S. presidential election on July 16, in the aftermath of an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, but has steadily seen his odds lengthen.
Trump had a 63% chance to win the presidency on July 21, the day Biden dropped out, while Harris sat at 29%.
Trump is one of only two presidents to win the election as an underdog, per USA Today, as he defeated Hillary Clinton with +350 odds in 2016. Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey as a +800 underdog in 1948.
Trump and Harris have chosen vice-presidential running mates within the past month, and Harris’ choice of Minnesota governor Tim Walz has been more well-received by the betting markets than Trump’s choice of Ohio senator J.D. Vance.
Harris, the current vice president, would become the first woman in history to become President of the United States.
